“Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” fell short of becoming the highest-grossing film to open on a Wednesday, according to studio data compiled by Web site Box Office Mojo.
The sixth installment of Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter movie series took in $58.2 million Wednesday. Three weeks earlier, “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” grossed $62 million to smash the prior record for a Wednesday opening.
Time Warner Inc.’s Warner Bros. last August delayed the film’s release to this summer from November. Blockbusters historically have done best during the summer, when children are out of school and more adults take off from work.
The prior Harry Potter film — “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,” which also opened on a mid-July Wednesday, had a $44.2 million debut two years ago. That figure, until “Revenge of the Fallen,” was the best opening for the day. “Order of the Phoenix” went on to gross $292 million in the U.S., second-best of the series.
The latest “Transformers” offering has taken in $345.2 million in its first 21 days, already putting it 14th of all time. The film has grossed another $376.7 million internationally.
